I used the 7.1 soundmixer by Phoenix to create a multi channel sound file. All works great except that there is a cannon boom I set to play on the low frequency channel and it doesn't seem to play through the subwoofer. All of the other channels play through both the designated speaker AND the subwoofer. I'm wondering if I did something wrong in mixing the sounds or if this is just how 7.1 works or if it is how my sound card handles 7.1. Is there a way to tell soundmixer what it should and should not send to the subwoofer?
The only 7.1 soundcard I found was a Diamond "Extreme".
Sub woofers are designed to primarily play low frequency sound, and a 7.1 system only uses 1 because the human ear is not capable of discerning the direction of low frequency sound.
Also, some sound systems sample the sound from all channels and diverts the low frequency sound to the sub woofer
if your speaker system is using a sub woofer then its best to send all sounds to the sub woofer AND to a directional speaker, this will give the the benefit of low frequency sound from the sub woofer and directional sound from the satellite speaker.
if you want to use all 8 channels for directional sound only then you need to use a sound system that doesn't have a sub woofer, eg 4 pairs of stereo speakers.
