Here is a little something that I noticed about converting Audio files into 7.1 with a silent mask. As always YMMV. When creating a silent mask, make sure that you don't make it too silent. You want it barely audible with a pair of headphones.
I was struggling creating the 7.1 audio with the silent mask and audio on only one channel. The output avi file from WavAviMux.exe ended up being 0Kb and could not be played. I then looked at the creaking noise which came in the 7.1 sound mixer folder. I noticed that on the silent mask track, I could still hear a bit of the audio. These files worked without problem to convert. I then recreated my silent masks without going so overboard on lowering the volume and it's worked for me every time since. _________________ Rev. Noch

The 7.1 sound mix is a hack I developed a few years ago using a piece of software from Microsoft, I have found in the past that the process can be a little temperamental, and Rev. Nochs findings may explain a lot.
For people who are having a problem mixing sounds there is a sound file and silent mask included in the installation which you can test the process and your hardware on. _________________ Bryan Davis

Another option to consider is a Delta 410 PCI sound card from M-Audio. It's been discontinued for quite some time, but they can be found occasionally on Ebay for less than $75. It's a 4 input, 10 output (4 analog L/R and one digital L/R). It requires a PCI slot, so it obviously wouldn't work with a notebook. Here's a link to the manual:

I have a couple of these I use for my multi-zone audio system in my house. Each pair of outputs shows up as a separate audio device in Windows, so it works fine within VSA when selecting the sound file and output device. I'm only mentioning this as it seems it might be easier than "hacking" a 7.1 audio file. I haven't yet purchased Excorcist due to lack of funds and time constraints, but I should have it within a few months so I'll be able to fully report on the funstionallity.
